Mode and Tempo in Technological Evolution: innovation, extinction, and the dynamics of technological

Investigating the quantitative dynamics of technological evolution can contribute to theories of how knowledge emerges, thrives and goes extinct. Alfaro and his team seek to develop models of the relationship between competition, innovation, diversification, and extinction in technology. Using a high quality large-scale dataset, they will apply the toolkit of biological macroevolution to build a framework for testing theories and characterizing the dynamics of technological change. Ultimately, this research seeks to understand how innovation really works, by considering the essential factors of opportunity, diversity, and extinction. Using the methods of macroevolutionary biology will provide “a more ambitious investigation of the patterns and dynamics of technological evolution.”
